Troubleshooting: Images Not Loading on Contently Portfolio Site Across Multiple Browsers

Overview

A customer experienced an issue where images on his Contently portfolio site were not loading across multiple browsers including Safari, Chrome, and Firefox on a Mac. After further investigation and troubleshooting, it was discovered that a network filter was blocking connections to certain AWS servers. The Console tab in the browser inspector had many errors accessing jpg or png files:

[Error] Failed to load resource: Could not connect to the server. (12-2-17_at_11.39_PM.jpg, line 0)

[Error] Failed to load resource: Could not connect to the server. (united-airlines-logo.png, line 0)

Solution

The solution to the issue was to adjust the network filter settings to allow connections to the necessary servers. Here are the steps the customer took to resolve the issue:

  1. The customer first tried to rule out problems by turning off AdGuard, then shut down the macOS Firewall, along with browser and cross-site tracking prevention, but those attempts didn't work.
  2. The customer remembered a network filter was operating and turned it off. All three browsers then functioned normally with Contently.
  3. The customer set up new rules in the filter based on the HAR report to allow connections to 34.198.52.33 and 18.211.151.155 which enabled Safari to connect to Contently, but didn't work for other browsers.
  4. The customer noticed that another rule was active that blocked connections to s3.amazonaws.com. Turning that rule off enabled Firefox and Chrome to function normally with Contently.

Summary

In conclusion, if you are experiencing issues with images not loading on your Contently portfolio site across multiple browsers, it may be due to a network filter blocking connections to certain servers. Adjusting the network filter settings to allow these connections can resolve the issue.
